Did you know that in Hinduism, animals are very, very special? Hindus believe that God lives inside every living thing — every bird, every fish, every puppy, and every tiny ant! That is why we treat animals with love and kindness.
The Cow — Our Mother The most special animal in Hinduism is the cow. We call her Gau Mata, which means Mother Cow. Why do we call her mother? Because she gives us milk! From milk, we make butter, yogurt, and yummy sweets. She gives and gives and never asks for anything back. That is why Hindus love and protect cows. When you see a cow, you can bow your head and say thank you!
The Elephant — Lord Ganesha Do you know Lord Ganesha? He has the head of an elephant! Elephants are big, strong, and very smart. They are also gentle and kind. Lord Ganesha is the god who removes problems from our path. Before we start anything new — like school or a trip — we pray to Ganesha first. His big elephant ears remind us to listen well, and his small eyes remind us to focus.
The Monkey — Lord Hanuman Hanuman is a monkey god, and he is a superhero! He could fly, lift mountains, and was never afraid. Hanuman loved Lord Rama so much that he would do anything for him. Monkeys are clever and playful, just like Hanuman. When you see a monkey jumping from tree to tree, remember brave Hanuman!
The Peacock — Lord Kartikeya's Ride The beautiful peacock is the national bird of India. Its feathers are blue, green, and gold — so pretty! Lord Kartikeya, the warrior god, rides on a peacock. Lord Krishna also wears a peacock feather in his hair. When a peacock dances in the rain with its feathers spread out wide, it looks like magic!
The Snake — Lord Shiva's Friend Some people are scared of snakes, but in Hinduism, snakes are respected. Lord Shiva wears a snake around his neck like a scarf! Lord Vishnu rests on a giant snake called Shesha. Snakes remind us that even things that look scary can be good.
The Mouse — Ganesha's Little Helper Lord Ganesha has a tiny mouse as his ride! The mouse is called Mushika. Even though Ganesha is so big and the mouse is so small, they work together as a team. This teaches us that big and small friends can help each other.
The Eagle — Garuda Lord Vishnu flies on a giant eagle called Garuda. Garuda is super fast and super strong. He carries Lord Vishnu across the sky to help people.
Why Do We Love Animals? Hindus believe in a word called Ahimsa. It means not hurting any living thing. Every animal has feelings, just like you and me. They feel happy, sad, and scared. So we should be gentle with all animals — feed the birds, pet the dogs softly, and never hurt even a small bug.
Next time you see an animal, smile and remember — God lives in them too! Treat every creature with love, and you will make the world a happier place.
