Concept 3

Om is made of three sounds: A-U-M

Have you ever listened very carefully when everything is quiet? Maybe at night before you sleep, or early in the morning? Long, long ago, wise people in India sat very still and listened. They listened so carefully that they heard a special sound. It was not a bird. It was not the wind. It was a hum that seemed to come from everywhere — from the sky, the trees, the rivers, and even from inside their own hearts. That sound was Om.

Om is the most special sound in all of Hinduism. We write it with a beautiful symbol that looks like this: ॐ. You may have seen it in your home, in a temple, or on a prayer book. It is a very old and very loved symbol.

Let us try saying Om together! First, open your mouth wide and say "Aaa." Feel how the sound starts deep in your tummy. Next, slowly bring your lips closer and say "Ooo." Feel how the sound moves up to your chest. Finally, close your lips and hum "Mmm." Feel how the sound buzzes on your lips and the top of your head. Aaa-Ooo-Mmm. That is Om!

Those three sounds are very important. "A" stands for when the world begins. "U" stands for when the world is here right now. "M" stands for when the world rests. Together, A-U-M means everything — the beginning, the middle, and the end. Om holds the whole universe inside it, like a tiny seed holds a big tree inside it.

Here is a story about Om. A little girl named Meera once asked her grandmother, "Nani, why do we say Om before our prayers?" Her grandmother smiled and said, "When you call your friend on the phone, you first say hello, right? Om is like saying hello to God. It tells God that we are ready to talk, and it tells our hearts to be calm and listen."

Meera tried it. She sat down, closed her eyes, and said, "Ommmm." She felt warm and peaceful inside, like getting a big hug. "I feel so nice!" she said. Her grandmother nodded. "That is because Om connects your heart to everything around you — to the birds, the stars, the oceans, and to God who lives in all of them."

You can say Om anytime you want to feel calm and happy. Before you eat, before you study, or before you go to sleep. Many families say Om together at the start of a prayer or a puja. When everyone says Om at the same time, it sounds so beautiful, like a big, warm blanket of sound wrapping around everyone.

In temples, you will often hear Om being chanted. The sound fills the whole room and makes everything feel peaceful. Even the walls seem to hum along!

Here is something fun to remember: Om is like a superpower you carry inside you. You do not need any toys or tools. Just take a deep breath, open your mouth, and let the sound flow. Aaa-Ooo-Mmm. You are now connected to the whole universe!

So the next time you see the beautiful ॐ symbol, remember — it is not just a drawing. It is the sound of everything. It is the first sound, the oldest sound, and the most powerful sound. And it lives right inside you.
