Have you ever helped someone who was sad? Maybe you shared your toy with a friend, or you gave your mommy a hug when she was tired. That warm, happy feeling you got inside? That is called Dharma!
Dharma is a beautiful Sanskrit word. It means doing the right thing. When you are kind, when you tell the truth, when you help others — you are following your Dharma.
Let us hear a story about a little boy named Dhruva.
Long, long ago, there was a little prince named Dhruva. He was only five years old — maybe just as old as you! One day, Dhruva felt very sad. His stepmother was not nice to him. She said he could not sit on his father's lap.
Dhruva could have been mean back. He could have yelled or cried all day. But Dhruva did something different. He decided to do the right thing. He went into the forest and sat very still. He closed his eyes and thought about God. He was brave and patient. He did not give up.
God was so happy with little Dhruva that he gave him his very own star in the sky! Even today, we can see the Dhruva star shining bright every night. We call it the Pole Star. It never moves, just like Dhruva never gave up doing the right thing.
So what is Dharma for you? Let us think about it!
At home, your Dharma is to listen to your parents. When Amma or Appa ask you to pick up your toys, and you do it with a smile — that is Dharma!
At school, your Dharma is to be a good friend. When someone drops their crayons and you help pick them up — that is Dharma!
In nature, your Dharma is to be kind to animals and plants. When you give water to a thirsty plant or are gentle with a puppy — that is Dharma!
Dharma is like a little light inside your heart. It tells you what is right and what is wrong. When you feel good about something you did, that is your Dharma light shining bright!
But sometimes, doing the right thing is hard. Maybe your friends want to be mean to someone, but you know it is wrong. What do you do? You listen to that little light inside. You choose to be kind, even when it is hard. That is being really, really brave — just like Dhruva!
Here are some easy ways to follow your Dharma every day:
Say "please" and "thank you." These little words make people smile.
Share with your friends. When you share, everyone is happy.
Tell the truth. Even if you are scared, the truth is always the right thing.
Be kind to everyone. Even to people who are not kind to you.
Take care of nature. Pick up trash, water plants, and love animals.
Remember, you do not have to be big and strong to follow Dharma. Even a small child like you can do great things! Every time you choose to be good, kind, and brave, you make the whole world a little bit brighter.
So tonight, when you look up at the sky, try to find Dhruva's star. It will remind you that even the smallest person can shine the brightest — just by doing the right thing.
That is Dharma. And you can do it every single day!
