Have you ever said hello to someone and made them smile? In India, people have a very special way of saying hello. They say "Namaste!" Let us learn what this beautiful word means.
Namaste is a word from a very old language called Sanskrit. When you say Namaste, you are saying something really wonderful. You are saying, "The light in me sees the light in you." What does that mean? It means that there is something bright and good inside you, like a little lamp in your heart. And there is a little lamp in everyone else's heart too! When you say Namaste, you are telling the other person, "I can see your beautiful light!"
When you say Namaste, you do something special with your hands. You press your palms together in front of your chest, right near your heart. Then you bow your head a little bit. This is called "Anjali Mudra." Anjali means a gift, and Mudra means a shape you make with your hands. So you are making a gift shape with your hands!
Why do we put our hands near our heart? Because that is where our love lives. When we bring our hands together at our heart and bow, we are showing love and respect to the other person.
Let me tell you a little story. There was once a kind girl named Priya. Every morning, she would wake up and say Namaste to her mother and father. She would press her little hands together, bow her head, and say, "Namaste, Amma! Namaste, Appa!" Her parents would smile so big! It made the whole house feel warm and happy.
One day, Priya went to the park. She saw a new boy sitting all by himself. He looked a little sad. Priya walked up to him, pressed her hands together, and said, "Namaste! I am Priya!" The boy looked up and smiled. "Namaste!" he said back. They became the best of friends that day. Just one small word made someone feel welcome and loved.
You know what is really cool about Namaste? You can say it to anyone! You can say it to your grandparents, your teacher, your friends, and even people you are meeting for the very first time. It works for saying hello and for saying goodbye too!
Here is something to try at home. When you wake up tomorrow morning, find someone in your family. Put your hands together near your heart, bow your head gently, and say "Namaste" with a big smile. See how happy it makes them feel!
When we say Namaste, we remember that every person is special. Every person has a light inside them. A baby has a light. A grandma has a light. Your best friend has a light. Even you have a light! Namaste helps us remember to be kind and to treat everyone with love.
So the next time someone says Namaste to you, remember what they are really saying. They are saying, "I see the wonderful light inside you, and I think it is beautiful." And when you say it back, you are giving them the same gift.
Namaste, dear friend! Now you know one of the most beautiful words in the whole world.
