Have you ever seen a beautiful pink lotus flower? It grows in muddy water, but it blooms so clean and bright! There is a very special goddess who stands on a big, beautiful lotus. Her name is Lakshmi.
Goddess Lakshmi is one of the most loved goddesses in all of Hinduism. She is the goddess of good things — love, kindness, and sharing. When you see a picture of her, she looks so beautiful! She wears a bright red sari with gold edges. She has four hands, and gold coins fall from one of her hands. But those coins are not just about money. They mean all the good things in life — having food to eat, a family who loves you, and friends who care about you.
Let me tell you a wonderful story about how Lakshmi came into the world!
A long, long time ago, the gods and the beings of the sea worked together to churn a great big ocean. Imagine stirring a huge pot of milk, but this pot was the whole ocean! They stirred and stirred. Many amazing things came out of the ocean. And then, something magical happened. A beautiful goddess rose out of the water, standing on a pink lotus flower. She was glowing with light. All the gods smiled. This was Goddess Lakshmi!
She chose to be with Lord Vishnu, who takes care of the whole world. Together, they help everyone. Wherever Vishnu goes to help people, Lakshmi goes too. They are a wonderful team!
Do you know what makes Lakshmi really happy? When we share! Think about a time you shared your toy with a friend, or gave someone a hug when they were sad. That is exactly what Lakshmi teaches us. She says that when we give, we get even more back. Not just toys or treats, but happy feelings in our heart.
Lakshmi has four hands, and each one means something special. One hand gives blessings — like when your mom or dad kisses your head goodnight. Another hand gives good things to people who need them. The other two hands hold lotus flowers, which remind us to be good and beautiful on the inside, just like the lotus is beautiful even though it grows in mud.
Every year, there is a big, exciting festival called Diwali. People call it the Festival of Lights! On Diwali night, families light little clay lamps called diyas. They clean their whole house until it sparkles. Do you know why? Because they want to welcome Goddess Lakshmi into their home! People believe that Lakshmi visits clean, bright, and happy homes. So everyone cleans up, lights lamps, and shares sweets with friends and neighbors.
Here is something you can do to make Lakshmi smile. Every day, try to do one kind thing. Maybe you can share your crayons with a friend. Maybe you can help set the table for dinner. Maybe you can say thank you when someone is nice to you. These small acts of giving and kindness are like little lamps that light up the world.
An owl is Lakshmi's special animal. The owl can see in the dark. This reminds us that even when things feel hard or dark, good things are still there. We just have to look for them.
So remember, Goddess Lakshmi teaches us three big things. First, always share what you have. Second, be thankful for the good things in your life. Third, be kind to everyone around you. When you do these things, you carry a little bit of Lakshmi's light inside your heart!
Now, can you think of one thing you are thankful for today?
