The Loving Mother Goddess

Have you ever felt scared of something? Maybe a loud storm or a dark room? When you feel scared, you probably run to your mom or dad. They hold you close and make you feel safe. Did you know there is a goddess who does the same thing for the whole world? Her name is Durga, and she is the bravest mother of all!

Durga is one of the most loved goddesses in Hinduism. People call her "Ma Durga," which means Mother Durga. She is strong, kind, and full of love. She rides a big, beautiful lion! Can you imagine riding a lion? That is how brave she is.

Let me tell you a story about why Durga is so special.

A long, long time ago, there was a very mean monster called Mahishasura. He looked like a big buffalo, and he was so strong that nobody could stop him. He was mean to everyone — people, animals, and even the gods! He pushed everyone around and made them all very sad.

The gods tried to fight him, but Mahishasura was too strong. So all the gods got together and said, "We need someone even more powerful!" They all closed their eyes and shared their strongest powers. Something amazing happened — a bright, golden light appeared! And from that light came Goddess Durga!

She was beautiful and shining like the sun. She had many arms, and in each hand she held a special gift from the gods. One god gave her a sharp disc. Another gave her a tall trident, which is like a fork with three points. One gave her a bow and arrow. And the Mountain King gave her a mighty lion to ride!

Durga was not scared of Mahishasura at all. She looked at him and said, "You have been hurting everyone. It is time to stop!" The big mean monster laughed. He thought nobody could beat him. But Durga was stronger than he ever imagined.

They had a great big battle. Mahishasura tried to trick her by changing his shape — first into a buffalo, then into an elephant, then into other animals. But Durga was too smart! She could see through every trick. Finally, with one mighty push of her trident, she defeated the monster. The world was safe again!

Everyone was so happy! The flowers bloomed, the birds sang, and all the people danced with joy. They said, "Thank you, Ma Durga! You saved us all!"

Every year, people celebrate Durga during a big festival called Navratri. Navratri means "nine nights." For nine nights, people sing songs, dance, and pray to Ma Durga. They make beautiful statues of her riding her lion. They dress up in colorful clothes and eat yummy food. It is one of the happiest times of the year!

Do you know what we can learn from Durga? We can learn to be brave! Being brave does not mean you are never scared. It means you do the right thing even when you feel scared. If you see someone being mean to a friend, you can be brave like Durga and say, "Please stop. That is not nice."

Durga also teaches us that good always wins over bad. Sometimes bad things happen, and it feels like they will last forever. But just like in the story, good always wins in the end.

Next time you feel scared, close your eyes and think of Ma Durga riding her big lion. Remember that she is always watching over you, just like your mom and dad. She is the brave mother of the whole world, and she loves you very much!

Jai Ma Durga! That means "Victory to Mother Durga!" Can you say it? Jai Ma Durga!
