Have you ever made a card for someone you love? Maybe you drew a picture for your mommy or daddy. You did it because you love them so much! Puja is just like that — but we make it for God.
Puja means showing love to God. We do puja at home, right in our own house! Many Hindu families have a special little corner or a small shelf. This is called a mandir or a puja space. It is like God's little home inside our home.
What do we keep there? We keep a picture or a small statue of God. It could be Lord Ganesha with his big elephant head. It could be Lord Krishna playing his flute. It could be Goddess Lakshmi with her beautiful smile. Whoever your family loves to pray to — they live right there in your home!
Now, let us learn what we do during puja. First, we get clean. We wash our hands and face. God likes us to be neat and fresh. Then we sit in front of our little mandir.
We light a small lamp called a diya. The tiny flame is so pretty! It reminds us that God is like a light. God takes away all the dark, scary things and fills us with warm, bright feelings.
Next, we might light a stick of incense. It makes the room smell so nice — like flowers and sweetness. The smoke goes up, up, up into the air. It is like our prayers floating up to God.
Then we offer something to God. We can give a flower. We can give a piece of fruit or a small sweet. This is called prasad. When we share it with God first, the food becomes extra special. After puja, we get to eat the prasad. Yummy!
We also ring a little bell. Ding, ding, ding! The bell tells God, "Hello! I am here! I want to talk to you!" God always listens when we call.
We fold our hands together and close our eyes. This is called namaste or praying. We can say thank you to God. "Thank you for my family. Thank you for my food. Thank you for my friends." We can also ask God to help us. "Please help me be kind. Please help me be brave."
Sometimes we sing a small song for God. This is called an aarti. The songs are happy and full of love. You can clap your hands or ring the bell while you sing!
Here is a little story. Once there was a poor old woman. She had no flowers, no sweets, and no fancy things. But she loved God very much. Every day she sat quietly, folded her hands, and talked to God with all her heart. God was SO happy with her! Do you know why? Because God does not need big, expensive things. God just wants our love. A prayer from your little heart is the best gift you can ever give.
You can do puja too! Even if you are small, your prayer is very powerful. You can help light the diya with a grown-up. You can place a flower near God's picture. You can fold your hands and say one small prayer.
Remember — puja is not hard. Puja is just love. Every time you sit with God and talk from your heart, you are doing puja. And guess what? God is always smiling back at you.
