The Om Symbol — Meaning and Power

Have you ever dropped a pebble into a still pond? You see ripples spreading out in every direction, right? Now imagine a sound so powerful that its ripples created the entire universe — every star, every planet, every mountain, river, animal, and person. That sound is Om.

Om is the most sacred sound in Hinduism. It is not just a word — it is a vibration. Hindu scriptures teach us that before the universe existed, there was nothing but silence and stillness. Then, from that deep silence, a vibration arose — Ommmmm — and from that vibration, everything came into being. That is why Om is called the 'pranava,' which means 'the sound that sustains life.'

## The Three Sounds Inside Om

When you say Om slowly, you will notice it is actually made of three sounds: A (ah), U (oo), and M (mm). Try it right now — take a deep breath and say Ahhh... Ooo... Mmm. Did you feel that?

Each of these three sounds has a special meaning:

- A (Ah) represents Lord Brahma, the Creator. It is the beginning of all sounds, just like Brahma is the beginning of all creation. When you open your mouth to say 'Ah,' that is where every sound starts.

- U (Oo) represents Lord Vishnu, the Preserver. This sound keeps the vibration going, just like Vishnu keeps the universe running smoothly. Feel how the sound moves through your mouth.

- M (Mm) represents Lord Shiva, the Transformer. When you close your lips for 'Mm,' the sound does not disappear — it hums inside you. Shiva teaches us that nothing truly ends; it simply changes form.

So every time you chant Om, you are honoring all three powers of the universe — creation, preservation, and transformation — in a single breath!

## The Shape of Om

You have probably seen the Om symbol written in Devanagari script: ॐ. This beautiful symbol also has hidden meaning. The curves represent different states of consciousness — waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. The dot at the top represents 'turiya,' the highest state of peace and awareness. The curved line below the dot is like a veil that separates our everyday mind from that highest peace. When we chant Om with focus and devotion, we move closer to lifting that veil.

## Om in Daily Life

Om appears everywhere in Hindu practice. Most mantras begin with Om — like 'Om Namah Shivaya' or 'Om Namo Narayanaya.' Prayers, pujas, and sacred texts like the Upanishads all start with Om. Even the Mandukya Upanishad, one of the shortest but most powerful scriptures, is entirely about the meaning of Om!

Here is something wonderful you can try: sit quietly, close your eyes, and chant Om three times slowly. Notice how the sound starts deep in your belly with 'Ah,' rises through your chest with 'Oo,' and finishes with a gentle hum 'Mm' at your lips. After the third Om, sit in silence for a moment. That silence after Om is just as sacred as the sound itself — it is the space where you can feel connected to something much bigger than yourself.

## A Story to Remember

There is a beautiful story from the Chandogya Upanishad. A teacher named Uddalaka told his son Shvetaketu to put salt in water and leave it overnight. The next morning, the salt had dissolved — invisible, but when Shvetaketu tasted the water, it was salty everywhere. Uddalaka said, 'Just like this salt, the divine presence is everywhere, even when you cannot see it.' Om is like that salt — an invisible vibration flowing through everything in the universe.

So the next time you hear or chant Om, remember: you are connecting with the very first sound of creation, a sound that still echoes through every corner of the cosmos.
