Have you ever felt safe when someone you love is nearby? Maybe your mom or dad holds your hand when you cross the street. Maybe your grandma wraps you in a warm hug when you are sad. That safe, warm feeling is a little bit like what Lord Vishnu gives to the whole world!
Who Is Lord Vishnu?
Lord Vishnu is one of the most important gods in Hinduism. He has a very special job — he is the Protector. That means he takes care of the whole world and everyone in it. The birds, the trees, the animals, and every single person — Vishnu watches over all of them.
Imagine a big, beautiful blue sky. Lord Vishnu's skin is that same lovely blue color! He has four arms, and in each hand he holds something special. In one hand he holds a shiny disc called the Sudarshana Chakra. In another he holds a mace called Gada. He also carries a conch shell called Shankha that makes a loud, beautiful sound. And in his fourth hand he holds a lotus flower, which is soft and pretty. Each of these things helps him protect the world.
Where Does Vishnu Live?
Vishnu rests on a giant, gentle snake named Shesha in a beautiful ocean of milk called Kshira Sagara. The snake has many hoods and makes a cozy bed for Vishnu. Sitting near Vishnu is his wife, Goddess Lakshmi. She is the goddess of love and good things. Together, they take care of everyone.
Vishnu also has a special bird friend named Garuda. Garuda is a big, strong eagle, and Vishnu rides on Garuda's back when he flies across the sky. How cool is that — a god who rides on a giant bird!
Vishnu's Special Trick — Avatars!
Here is something amazing about Vishnu. Whenever the world is in trouble, Vishnu comes down to Earth to help. But he does not always come looking the same. Sometimes he comes as an animal. Sometimes he comes as a person. Each time he comes, we call it an Avatar.
Vishnu has come to Earth many times. Once, he came as a little fish called Matsya to save people from a big flood. Another time, he came as a kind prince named Rama. Rama was brave and good, and he always told the truth. You may have heard stories about Rama!
Another time, Vishnu came as Krishna. Little Krishna was a playful, happy baby who loved butter. He would sneak into the kitchen and eat butter when no one was looking! Krishna grew up to be very wise and taught people to be kind and to do their best.
Vishnu has come to Earth ten times. We call these his Dashavatara — that means ten avatars.
What Can We Learn from Vishnu?
Vishnu teaches us to care for others. When you share your toys with a friend, you are being like Vishnu. When you help your little brother or sister, you are being like Vishnu. When you are kind to animals and gentle with plants, you are being like Vishnu.
Vishnu also teaches us that help always comes when we need it. If you are ever scared or sad, you can close your eyes and think of Vishnu. Remember that blue god with four arms and a gentle smile, resting on his snake bed, always watching, always caring.
A Little Prayer
Many people say a short prayer to Vishnu. It goes like this: Om Namo Narayanaya. It means, I bow to Lord Vishnu. You can say it softly before bed, and it will fill your heart with peace.
So remember — Lord Vishnu is like the biggest, warmest hug in the whole universe. He is always there, always caring, always protecting. And the best way to make him happy is to be kind, just like him.
