A long, long time ago, in a beautiful little village called Vrindavan, there lived a very special boy. His name was Krishna. He had dark, lovely skin the color of rain clouds, and he always wore a bright yellow cloth. Krishna loved to play his flute, and when he played, even the birds stopped to listen!
Krishna lived with his family and many, many friends. The people of Vrindavan were very kind. They took care of cows, grew food, and loved each other. Every year, the villagers would have a big celebration. They would make yummy food and sweets and offer them to Indra, the king of the gods who sends the rain.
One year, little Krishna asked his father, "Baba, why do we pray to Indra?"
His father said, "We pray so that Indra will send rain for our farms and grass for our cows."
Krishna thought for a moment. Then he said, "But Baba, look at the big, green Govardhan Hill! The hill gives us fresh water. It gives grass to our cows. It gives us fruits and flowers. Should we not thank the hill too?"
The villagers listened to Krishna and thought he was right. So that year, they made a big, happy celebration for Govardhan Hill instead. They cooked piles of rice, sweets, and fruits. They sang songs and danced around the hill. Everyone was so happy!
But up in the sky, Indra was watching. He was very, very angry. "How dare they forget about me!" he shouted. Indra called for the biggest, darkest rain clouds. He told them to pour and pour and pour over Vrindavan.
Soon, the sky turned dark. Rain started falling — not gentle rain, but a huge, scary storm! The wind blew hard. Water was everywhere. The cows mooed in fear. The children cried. The mothers and fathers did not know what to do.
But Krishna smiled. He was not afraid at all. He walked up to the great Govardhan Hill. Then, with just one little finger — his tiny pinky finger — Krishna lifted the entire hill right up into the sky! He held it up high, like a giant umbrella.
"Come, everyone!" Krishna called. "Bring your families! Bring your cows! Come under the hill and stay dry and safe!"
All the people and all the animals of Vrindavan ran under the hill. It was warm and dry. The children stopped crying. The cows stopped mooing. Everyone felt safe because Krishna was protecting them.
The rain poured for seven days and seven nights. And for seven days and seven nights, little Krishna held up that great big hill on his one little finger. He did not get tired. He did not complain. He just smiled and kept everyone safe.
Finally, Indra looked down and saw something amazing. This little boy was stronger than his mightiest storm! Indra felt sorry for being so angry and proud. He stopped the rain. The sun came out. Beautiful rainbows filled the sky.
Indra came down from the sky and bowed before Krishna. "I am sorry," Indra said. "I was wrong to be angry. You are truly special."
Krishna gently put the hill back down. The villagers cheered and hugged each other. They thanked Krishna and they thanked Govardhan Hill.
This story teaches us something very important. When someone you love is in trouble, be brave and help them — just like Krishna helped his village. And remember, being strong does not mean being mean. Krishna was the strongest one, but he was also the kindest. He used his power to protect, not to hurt.
Even today, people visit Govardhan Hill in India. They walk around it and remember the day little Krishna held it up on his finger to save everyone he loved.
