A long, long time ago in a beautiful land called India, there lived a prince named Arjuna. He had four brothers, and together they were called the Pandavas. Arjuna was special because he wanted to be the greatest archer in the whole world!
An archer is someone who shoots arrows with a bow. You might have seen a bow and arrow in storybooks. Arjuna loved his bow and arrow more than anything.
Arjuna had a wonderful teacher named Dronacharya. Everyone called him Guru Drona. A guru is a teacher, and Guru Drona was the best teacher of archery in the land. He taught many princes how to fight and use weapons.
One day, Guru Drona wanted to test all his students. He put a wooden bird high up on a tree branch. Then he asked each prince to aim at the bird's eye.
First, he asked one prince, "What do you see?" The prince said, "I see the tree, the sky, the leaves, and the bird." Guru Drona said, "Step back. You are not ready."
He asked another prince the same question. That prince said, "I see the branch and the bird." Guru Drona shook his head. "Step back," he said again.
Then it was Arjuna's turn. Guru Drona asked, "Arjuna, what do you see?"
Arjuna stood very still. He looked straight ahead. Then he said, "I see only the eye of the bird. Nothing else."
Guru Drona smiled a big smile. "Shoot!" he said. Arjuna let go of his arrow, and it flew straight into the bird's eye! Everyone clapped and cheered.
This story teaches us something very important. When Arjuna looked at the bird, he did not get distracted. He did not look at the trees or the sky or the other princes. He only looked at his target. That is called focus.
When you are doing your homework or learning something new, try to be like Arjuna. Look only at what you are doing. Do not get distracted by toys or sounds around you. If you focus like Arjuna, you can do amazing things!
Arjuna became the greatest archer because he practiced every single day. Even when it was hot outside, even when he was tired, he still practiced. He would wake up early and shoot arrows before the sun came up. One famous story says he even practiced shooting in the dark by feeling where the target was!
Arjuna also loved and respected his guru very much. He always listened to Guru Drona and did what his teacher told him. Because he was such a good student, Guru Drona taught him extra special skills.
Arjuna was also very brave. When there was trouble, he always stood up to protect people who needed help. He was kind to animals and respectful to elders.
Later in life, Arjuna became best friends with Lord Krishna. Krishna was God himself! Krishna became Arjuna's chariot driver and guide. He taught Arjuna that being good and doing the right thing is the most important thing in life.
So remember three things from Arjuna's story. First, always practice hard at what you want to learn. Second, listen to your teachers and respect them. Third, be brave and kind to everyone around you. If you do these things, you can be a hero just like Arjuna!
