Tapas is the practice of voluntary self-discipline, sustained effort, and endurance undertaken to achieve a worthy goal. It involves embracing discomfort — whether physical, mental, or emotional — as a means of strengthening character and refining one's will. In everyday life, it manifests as consistent practice, delayed gratification, and the courage to stay committed when ease tempts one to quit.
Tapas is the inner fire of purification that burns away mental impurities (mala), attachments (rāga), and ignorance (avidyā). Through sustained spiritual practice — meditation, mantra, prāṇāyāma, or ethical restraint — tapas generates a transformative heat that refines consciousness and awakens dormant spiritual capacities. It is one of the three pillars of Kriyā Yoga alongside svādhyāya and Īśvara-praṇidhāna.
