Spanda
SPUN-duh (the 'a' is short, as in 'about')
Level 4Etymology
Root: From the Sanskrit root √spand (स्पन्द्) meaning 'to throb, quiver, pulsate.' The noun spanda is derived as a action-noun indicating the act or state of vibrating.
Literal meaning: Vibration, throb, pulsation — the primordial quivering or tremor of consciousness.
Definition
Spanda is the subtle vibration or creative pulse behind all movement and change in the universe. It is the dynamic energy that makes thought, breath, heartbeat, and every sensory experience possible. In everyday life, it is the felt sense of aliveness underlying all activity.
Spanda is the sacred throb of Śiva's consciousness — the dynamic, self-aware pulsation through which the Absolute simultaneously rests in stillness and expresses itself as the manifold universe. It is the bridge between the unmanifest (Śiva) and the manifest (Śakti), neither wholly motion nor wholly rest, but the creative vibration that is the very nature of awareness.
Spanda is the ultimate nature of Reality itself — the spontaneous, uncaused vibration of pure Consciousness (Cit) that is identical with Paramaśiva. It is not a movement within something else; it is the self-luminous throb of Being recognizing itself. Beyond cause and effect, spanda is the paradox of absolute stillness experienced as infinite dynamism.

Common Misconception
A common misconception is that spanda refers to ordinary physical vibration or energy, like sound waves or electromagnetic frequency. In reality, spanda is not a material vibration but the primordial pulsation of consciousness itself — it is the metaphysical ground from which all physical vibrations arise. It is awareness recognizing its own dynamism, not a measurable oscillation.
