Pātāla

Pātāla refers to the seven subterranean realms of Hindu cosmology situated beneath the earth (Bhū-loka). These seven regions—Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talātala, Mahātala, Rasātala, and Pātāla—are inhabited by Dānavas, Daityas, Nāgas, and Yakṣas. The Purāṇas describe them as magnificently adorned realms, illuminated by the jewels on the hoods of great serpents.

Pātāla symbolizes the hidden dimensions of consciousness that lie beneath ordinary awareness—the subconscious and unconscious layers of the mind where latent impressions (saṃskāras) and deep-rooted desires reside. Spiritual descent into Pātāla represents the yogic process of confronting one's shadow nature and transmuting hidden karmic forces. The treasures guarded by Nāgas in Pātāla signify the kuṇḍalinī śakti coiled at the base of the subtle body.

From the absolute standpoint, Pātāla is not separate from Brahman, for all lokas—upper, middle, and lower—are manifestations of the one infinite Reality. The distinction between Svarga and Pātāla dissolves in the realization that no spatial direction exists in the non-dual Absolute. As the Bhāgavata Purāṇa hints, even the netherworld surpasses heaven in splendor, pointing to the truth that divine presence pervades all planes without hierarchy.
