Level 3Etymology
Root: Sandhi contraction of 'na' (न, not) + 'iti' (इति, this/thus). Each 'neti' is a compound negation particle meaning 'not so' or 'not this.' The phrase is a reduplicative expression emphasizing exhaustive negation.
Literal meaning: Not this, not this; or 'neither this, nor that'
Definition
Neti Neti is a method of inquiry in which one systematically negates every identifiable quality, object, or concept to arrive at what remains beyond all description. In practice, it is a disciplined way of peeling away false identifications — 'I am not this body, I am not this thought, I am not this emotion' — to discover one's essential nature. It serves as an intellectual and meditative tool for self-knowledge.
Neti Neti is the via negativa of Vedānta, the principal technique by which the Upaniṣadic seers pointed to Brahman — the ultimate Reality that transcends every predicate the mind can assign. By negating all conditioned attributes (upādhis), the seeker dissolves the superimposition (adhyāsa) of name and form upon the attributeless Absolute. What remains after all negation is not a void, but pure unconditioned Awareness (Cit).
From the standpoint of absolute truth, Neti Neti is not a process at all, for Brahman was never obscured and requires no uncovering. The negation is the self-collapsing gesture of māyā recognizing its own unreality. In the silence after the final 'not this,' there is neither negator nor negated — only the non-dual fullness (pūrṇam) that Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 2.3.6 declares to be 'the Truth of truth' (satyasya satyam).

Common Misconception
A common misconception is that Neti Neti is nihilistic — that by negating everything, Vedānta concludes nothing exists or that Brahman is a mere emptiness. In truth, the negation targets only limited attributes and false identifications, not existence itself. What remains after complete negation is not śūnya (void) but sat-cit-ānanda — infinite existence, consciousness, and bliss. Neti Neti removes the finite coverings to reveal the infinite positive reality that cannot be captured by any finite description.
Modern Application
In daily life, Neti Neti offers a powerful antidote to the modern epidemic of misidentification. We habitually define ourselves by job titles, social media profiles, political affiliations, and emotional states — then suffer when these inevitably change. Practicing Neti Neti means pausing to notice: 'I am aware of this anxiety, but I am not this anxiety. I hold this role, but I am not this role.' This is not detachment from life but freedom within it. Therapists recognize a parallel in cognitive defusion — the ability to observe thoughts without being consumed by them. By regularly questioning 'Is this truly what I am?', one cultivates resilience, reduces reactive suffering, and accesses a stable inner ground that external circumstances cannot shake.
